“Dial 1962 — Because Every Life Matters!”

by Animal SAYS

Did you know there’s a special ambulance just for animals? And all you have to do is dial 1962. Yes, it’s that easy.

In Tamil Nadu, animals don’t have to suffer in silence. Thanks to a compassionate initiative by the Tamil Nadu Government, emergency help is just one call away—for street animals, pets, or even farm animals in distress.

Let’s take you through what this amazing service is, why it matters, and how you—yes, you—can be part of something bigger.

What is 1962? The Animal Ambulance Helpline You Should Know About

The 1962 toll-free number connects you to Tamil Nadu’s Animal Medical Mobile Ambulance (AMMA) service. Launched in 2016 under the leadership of the late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, this service has been a silent guardian for countless animals across the state.

Whether it’s an injured dog, a cow in labor, or a bird fallen from its nest—you can call 1962, and a trained veterinary team will be dispatched to the location. The best part? The service is free.

It’s available 24/7 in Chennai and steadily expanding across all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu.

Why Does This Matter? The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Chennai is now home to over 1.8 lakh stray dogs—that’s three times more than in 2018!

• Only 27% of these animals are sterilized, leaving the rest to continue an endless cycle of birth, neglect, and suffering.

• Every year, thousands of cows, goats, and pets across rural Tamil Nadu suffer from untreated wounds, diseases, or birthing complications—many of which are avoidable with early intervention.

• Tamil Nadu holds 4.56% of India’s total livestock population—that’s over 2 crore animals. With such numbers, access to quick care can mean life or death.

How Does It Work?

Calling 1962 connects you to a dispatcher who will collect basic details:

• Your location

• The type of animal

• The issue (injury, accident, illness, etc.)

A vet and a trained assistant arrive at the spot with a mobile clinic—equipped with first-aid kits, oxygen support, and sometimes even mini-labs for immediate diagnosis. If needed, the animal is taken to a government hospital or shelter for extended care.

How You Can Help Create Better Change

Kindness doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how you can make a big difference:
